Renew ANCC certification: two rulebooks, one cutover date
Updated Nov 7, 2026
ANCC renews its NP credentials every five years, and the requirements depend on the day you submit. An application sent by January 31, 2027 follows the handbook effective September 10, 2025; anything submitted from February 1, 2027 falls under the new handbook. Both ask for the same continuing education. What changes is the second half of the renewal, and the exam drops out as a way to renew.

The same rules cover NP credentials ANCC now renews without testing, such as ANP-BC, ACNP-BC, GNP-BC and PPCNP-BC (the list). Discounted renewal prices go to ANA and AANP members, and to APNA members for the psychiatric credential; GAPNA members pay $320 (FNP-BC page, read Nov 7, 2026).

Under the 2025 handbook you need two things inside your five-year period:
- 75 continuing education contact hours. For an APRN, 25 of them must be in pharmacology.
- At least one activity from the eight renewal categories, such as academic credits, presentations, a publication or research, preceptor hours, professional service, practice hours or the exam.
Practice hours are category 7, and the handbook is explicit: they "are an option to renew your certification but are not required" (p. 14). The 1,000-hour minimum is NPCB's rule, not ANCC's. Since January 14, 2026, every activity must fall inside the current five-year period and be completed before you submit.
Applications from February 1, 2027
The new handbook (PDF pp. 7–9) keeps the 75 CE hours with 25 in pharmacology and replaces the eight categories with three pathways. You complete one activity in one pathway:
- Additional continuing education: another 75 contact hours.
- Practice: pick one of three options, measured in hours: practice (1,000), precepting (120) or volunteer service (120).
- Scholarship: one EBP or QI project, 5 clock hours of presenting, a publication or a research study (PDF pp. 10–11).
Retesting is gone from the list. In the 2027 handbook the exam appears only under reactivation, for a credential that has already expired and still has an exam (PDF pp. 16–17).
Deadlines and the missing grace period
- You can apply up to one year before the expiration date.
- ANCC allows no grace period and no backdating: a certification not renewed on time expires, and the credential may not be used (2025 handbook, pp. 15, 19).
- A renewal-only credential that lapses cannot be tested back, because no exam exists for it.
If you also hold an NPCB credential
NPCB counts differently: practice hours are required unless you retest, and preceptor hours are worth at most 25 CE. Its rules are on AANP recertification, and the two boards' exams are compared on AANP vs ANCC.
ANCC renewal questions from NPs
Do ANCC nurse practitioners need 1,000 practice hours to renew?
Not under the current handbook: practice hours are one of eight optional categories. From February 1, 2027 they are one choice inside the practice pathway, next to 120 preceptor or 120 volunteer hours.
Can I renew ANCC certification by retaking the exam?
Until January 31, 2027 the exam is one of the eight categories. Applications from February 1, 2027 cannot use it; the exam is then used only to reactivate an expired credential.
Do the 25 pharmacology hours count toward the 75?
Yes. The 25 pharmacology contact hours are part of the 75, under both handbooks.
