NNP-BC eligibility, by graduation date

Facts read from nccwebsite.org · last checked Nov 7, 2026

The time you have to sit the neonatal NP board after finishing your program is getting shorter, and later graduates will need more supervised direct care. NCC has announced both changes, and your graduation date alone decides which set of rules you fall under.

Table 1. Graduation-date rows copied from NCC's policy page on 750 direct patient care hours and the 5-year testing limit, read November 7, 2026. The first row conflicts with the 5-year rule; see the note below.[1][2]

Who can applyCurrent US RN or APRN license and an accredited graduate NNP program (master’s, DNP or post-master’s), taken within 8 years of graduatingCertificate-prepared applicants are not accepted. Canadian programs accredited by CASN qualify only if completed after January 1, 2026.NCC [1]
Eligibility rule aheadFrom January 1, 2029 candidates must test within 5 years of graduating; graduates after December 31, 2029 need 750 direct patient care clinical hoursSimulation does not count toward the 750 hours. NCC’s policy table lets graduates before 2029 register under the 600-hour standard until December 31, 2033 within 8 years, but its summary and the NNP exam page require everyone to test within 5 years of graduating from January 1, 2029. After 2033 everyone needs 750 hours and the 5-year window.NCC [1][2]

What qualifies you today

  • A license: a current, unencumbered US RN or APRN license. A Canadian license is accepted if the program was an approved US one or a CASN-accredited Canadian one.
  • The program: an accredited graduate NNP program that meets the board's program requirements, at master's, DNP or post-master's level. Certificate-prepared applicants are no longer accepted.
  • Canadian programs: completed after January 1, 2026.
  • The time limit: counted from your graduation date; today's limit and the announced one are both in the table.
  • Documents: an official transcript PDF from the registrar showing the NNP program and a PDF of your diploma, uploaded with the application; post-master's applicants add their certificate of completion (exam page).

Direct patient care hours, explained

The board ties the change to three educational standards: NONPF's 2022 standards for NP education, the 2023 NANN/NANNP educational standards for neonatal programs and the NPWH addendum for women's health (hours policy).

  • Direct care only: simulation hours cannot count toward the requirement.
  • In the specialty: the hours must meet the standards set for NNP students in neonatal practice settings.
  • DNP students: the required hours can sit inside the program's 1,000-hour minimum; they are not added on top.
  • Already certified: the policy does not touch a credential you keep current. It applies again only if the credential lapses and you have to qualify anew.

The same rules govern the women's health NP exam from the same board; its own details are on WHNP-BC exam facts.

Graduated before 2029?

The policy table gives pre-2029 graduates up to 8 years, until December 31, 2033. Its own summary and the NNP exam page say everyone tests within 5 years of graduating from January 1, 2029 (exam page). Plan on five, and get NCC's answer in writing before relying on eight.

Planning around your graduation date

  1. Find your row in the table above by the date on your transcript, not the date you finished clinicals.
  2. Graduated more than five years ago and never tested? Test before January 1, 2029, or get NCC's ruling in writing first.
  3. Still in a program? Ask it now how many direct patient care hours you will log, simulation excluded; graduates from 2030 on need the higher number.
  4. Then book: the application, window and fees are on exam facts and cost.

NNP-BC eligibility, quick answers

Do simulation hours count toward NCC's 750 clinical hours?

No. Only direct patient care hours in the specialty count, with zero simulation.

I finished a post-graduate NNP certificate. Can I apply?

A post-master's NNP program qualifies; upload its certificate of completion with your transcript. A certificate without a graduate degree does not.

Does the five-year rule affect NNPs who are already certified?

Not while you maintain the credential. It matters only if the certification lapses.
