WHNP-BC cost, from application to first maintenance

Facts read from nccwebsite.org · last checked Nov 7, 2026

Checked in November 2026, the fee stands at $325, including a $50 non-refundable application fee. The board has no membership, so there is no second, discounted price to compare; what else you pay hinges on retakes, schedule changes and how you earn continuing education afterward.

One price, whatever your memberships

Of the $325, the application part is kept even if you withdraw, and withdrawing returns the amount in the table. Membership in a nursing association does not lower this fee, unlike the member rates of the NPCB and ANCC exams on this site. If an employer or a program pays, the receipt is the same for everyone.

Two attempts in one calendar year

Under the retake rule you wait 45 days after the test, then reapply with the full fee; at most 2 attempts in a calendar year. The worst case inside one year:

  1. First attempt$325
  2. Second attempt after the waiting period, as a new application$325
  3. Two sittings, the most a calendar year allows$650

Prices as of Nov 7, 2026.

Avoidable fees

  • Moving outside the window: a $125 change request. A date or method change inside the 90-day window is free, so book early and move within the period if you must.
  • An application that stalls: a missing transcript or diploma delays approval; upload both with the application.
  • A retake you were not ready for: the second attempt costs the full $325 again; read the score report descriptors before you reapply.

The bill every three years

Maintenance comes due every 3 years. The fee is $100, less with NCC continuing education ($80, $70 or $60 for 15, 30 or 45 hours). The continuing education itself is a separate cost unless your employer covers it, and the size of the plan depends on the assessment (maintenance). Skipping the assessment is the expensive route; the renewal row above shows by how much.

Prep spending

The board sells a $35 preview test that shows the look of its items; it is a format check, not a course. Course and question-bank vendors set prices that change often, so we do not list them. How to spend study hours by the outline: study guide.

Questions about money

Is there a member discount on the WHNP exam?

No. The certifying body has no membership, so every candidate pays $325.

Does the fee cover a retake?

No. The second sitting is billed again in full as a fresh application; see the retesting row for timing.
