From application to certificate
- Test fee: $420, or $300 for members of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) or APHON. The gap is $120, so membership pays for itself on this fee alone only if a year of dues costs less than that. The dues are not on the fee pages; check them with the society before joining.
- DoubleTake, optional: $100, and only at the first application. It cannot be added after a fail.
- Window transfer: $100 for a one-time transfer, requested before the authorization expires, to a test date within the next 12 months, if you cannot test inside your 90 days.
- Testing abroad: $75 on top of the test fee, and DoubleTake is not available with it.
When DoubleTake pays off
Without the add-on, a second attempt costs the full test fee again. With it, you pay $100 up front, kept even if you pass, and the second attempt needs no new test fee as long as you apply for it within 180 days of the first attempt.
It is worth buying when your chance of failing the first attempt is higher than the add-on divided by the fee:
- Without membership: $100 ÷ $420 ≈ 24%.
- With membership: $100 ÷ $300 ≈ 33%.
For scale: 79% of initial candidates passed in 2025, a fail share of 21%, just under the non-member break-even. In 2022 and 2023 the pass rate was 63% and 61%, a fail share near two in five, well above both lines. A national rate is not your own chance, so weigh your practice scores and how recently you met the hours.
Expected cost of passing, non-member
At most two attempts, 2025 initial pass rate, DoubleTake second attempt inside 180 days.
- Without DoubleTake, $420 plus 21% of $420≈ $508
- With DoubleTake, $420 plus $100, pass or fail$520
- Without DoubleTake at the 2023 rate, 39% fail≈ $584
- ReadingClose to even at the 2025 rate; the add-on wins if your own odds look like 2022–2023

FreeTake: the employer carries the risk
Under FreeTake, the employer pays the test fee only when the nurse passes, and one retake within 6 months is allowed. It is an organizational program: a hospital or practice enrolls and hands out codes, so an individual NP cannot sign up alone. FreeTake applicants cannot add DoubleTake or move to another testing window. It covers the RN-level exams too, so an employer that already uses it for OCN candidates can add NP applicants.
The renewal bill four years on
Renewing by practice hours and points costs $460 at the final deadline or $360 by the early-bird date ($340 and $240 for members). Renewing by retest costs $420 ($300 for members). Points plus a retest, the only option without the practice-hours requirement, costs up to $620. The dates and the ILNA are on the renewal page.
Three four-year totals
- Member, first-attempt pass, early renewal by points: $300 + $240 = $540, plus four years of dues.
- Non-member, first-attempt pass, renewal at the final deadline: $420 + $460 = $880.
- Non-member, one fail without DoubleTake, early renewal: $420 × 2 + $360 = $1,200.

AOCNP fees, short answers
Can I buy DoubleTake after a failed first attempt?
No. It is sold only with the first application, and the second attempt must then be applied for within 180 days of the first attempt.
Does APHON membership get the member price?
Yes. The member price, $300, applies to members of either ONS or APHON.
Is DoubleTake refunded if I pass the first time?
No. The add-on is kept whether or not you need the second attempt, which is why the break-even arithmetic above matters.
