AOCNP review, planned around the 2025 outline
Facts read from oncc.org · last checked Nov 7, 2026
Almost half of the scored questions, 45%, sit in one area: cancer treatment and supportive care. A plan that follows the outline starts there, moves to the cancer continuum, and keeps professional practice short.

An eight-week AOCNP calendar weighted by area
- Week 1, baseline: sit the board's free practice test or our practice test before reviewing anything, and tally misses by area.
- Weeks 2–4, area II: cancer treatment (drug classes, radiation, transplant, trials, response) and symptom management (toxicity grading, nausea, pain, palliative care).
- Weeks 5–6, area I: cancer continuum: hereditary risk, staging, biomarkers, survivorship.
- Week 7: oncologic emergencies and psychosocial issues.
- Week 8: one evening on professional practice (what area V covers), then a timed set paced at roughly 60 seconds an item, and a last pass through your weakest area.
Three of eight weeks on area II is a little under its share; the baseline week and the final set are spent on it too.
The books ONCC names
The 2026 test manual prints a sampling of references for this exam and endorses none of them. The general reviews on the list:
- Advanced Oncology Nursing Certification Review and Resource Manual, 3rd ed. (Baldwin, Coleman and Garzo Saria, ONS, 2023).
- Clinical Manual for the Oncology Advanced Practice Nurse, 4th ed. (Camp-Sorrell, Hawkins and Cope, ONS, 2022).
- Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice, 2nd ed. (Olsen and colleagues, ONS, 2023).
- Understanding and Managing Oncologic Emergencies, 3rd ed. (Kaplan, ONS, 2018), the oldest on the list.
- Also listed: Advanced Practice Palliative Nursing, 2nd ed. (2023); Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology, 12th ed. (2023); Mosby's Oncology Nursing Advisor, 3rd ed. (2023); Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests, 7th ed. (2021).
The manual's advice is one current general review plus targeted reading in your weak areas, not the whole list.
Review courses: what to check first
Review courses for this exam are sold by ONS and by cancer centers (MD Anderson's is one candidates search for by name). ONCC's site has a review-courses page, and its manual endorses no resource. A course gives you pacing and a lecturer's emphasis. Before paying, check that its syllabus follows the 2025 outline (five areas, from the 2022 role delineation study) and that drug content is current. No course is a condition of eligibility.
Material that has aged
- Old role study: the 2025 outline comes from the 2022 role delineation study. The board's own exam page still cites a 2019 study as of November 2026; the 2026 manual names 2022.
- Approvals and indications: oncology labels move fast, and the FDA withdraws accelerated approvals when confirmatory trials fail. Check a 2018 text's drug tables against current labels.
- Brand names: the exam uses generic names only, so learn pembrolizumab, not its brand.
- Scored count: a set that treats all 165 questions as scored is mis-sized; 125 count.
One trap per area, before you start
- Continuum: applying an average-risk screening schedule to a carrier or a survivor of chest radiation (cancer continuum).
- Treatment: reading early growth on immunotherapy as progression (cancer treatment).
- Symptoms: managing an immune-related adverse event without grading it first (symptom management).
- Emergencies: giving rasburicase without thinking of G6PD (oncologic emergencies).
- Psychosocial: treating a distress score as a diagnosis (psychosocial issues).
Generic names on test day
Items use generic drug names only. If your notes say a brand, add the generic beside it now; recall under time pressure follows the name you studied.

AOCNP prep, short answers
Is there an official AOCNP review book?
None officially. Its manual lists references as a sampling and endorses no single resource; the ONS certification review manual (3rd ed., 2023) is the first general review on that list.
How many weeks of review is enough?
The board sets no figure. The eight-week plan above assumes current oncology practice; add time if your NP program had no oncology concentration.
Is the board's free practice test enough preparation?
It is a fixed set of 50 questions with rationales and 14 days of access, so it works as a baseline. A second run measures memory of those items more than knowledge.
